NASA - Astronomy Picture of the Day - January 07, 2016 High Energy Andromeda - A mere 2.5 million light-years away, the Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, really is just next door as large galaxies go. In this (inset) scan, image data from NASA's Nuclear Spectrosopic Telescope Array has yielded the best high-energy X-ray view yet of our large neighboring spiral, revealing some 40 extreme sources of X-rays, X-ray binary star systems that contain a black hole or neutron star orbiting a more normal stellar companion. In fact, larger Andromeda and our own Milky Way are the most massive members of the local galaxy group. Andromeda is close enough that NuSTAR can examine its population of X-ray binaries in detail, comparing them to our own. The background image of Andromeda was taken by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer in energetic ultraviolet light. via NASA http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap160107.html #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

I'm sure all of us can agree that most, if not all, images taken of the universe are stunning. Some images, however, are not only stunning, they also offer us a new perspective on the universe and ourselves. One such image is the Hubble Deep Field. In 1995, astronomers performed an experiment in which they pointed the Hubble telescopes gaze at what appeared to be an empty region of the sky located in the constellation of Ursa Major for a total of ten days. With no bright stars or galaxies in the way, Hubble's sensitive instruments were able to capture light from some of the most distant objects in the cosmos over a total of 342 separate exposures. What astronomers found in Hubble's images was absolutely astonishing. What appeared to be an empty and dark region of the cosmos turned out to be filled with some of the most distant galaxies. The image was called the Hubble Deep Field. The image itself covers a region in the sky just 1/24th of a degree across, which is an extremely tiny region in the sky, yet there are over 3,000 individual galaxies in the image, some containing as many as 100 billion stars. Some of these galaxies are the oldest and farthest objects known, the earliest of which formed less than a billion years after the big bang. To date, the Hubble Deep Field is considered to be one of Hubble's most iconic images ever taken. Some of these galaxies formed long before the sun and the solar system were born. When you view this image you're looking billions of years into the past, long before there was any humans, life, and even Earth. Astronomers have used data from three of NASA's Great Observatories to make the most detailed study yet of an extremely massive young galaxy cluster. This rare cluster, which is located 10 billion light years from Earth, weighs as much as 500 trillion Suns. This object has important implications for understanding how these megastructures formed and evolved early in the Universe. The galaxy cluster called IDCS J1426.5+3508 (IDCS 1426 for short), is so far away that the light detected is from when the universe was roughly a quarter of its current age. It is the most massive galaxy cluster detected at such an early age. First discovered by the Spitzer Space Telescope in 2012, IDCS 1426 was observed using the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck Observatory to determine its distance. Observations from the Combined Array for Millimeter Wave Astronomy indicated it was extremely massive. New data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory confirm the galaxy cluster mass and show that about 90% of the mass of the cluster is in the form of dark matter, a mysterious substance detected so far only through its gravitational pull on normal matter composed of atoms. “We are really pushing the boundaries with this discovery,” said Mark Brodwin of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, who led the study. “As one of the earliest massive structures to form in the Universe, this cluster sets a high bar for theories that attempt to explain how clusters and galaxies evolve. #NASA #chandra - January 08, 2016 at 01:04AM Source: https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xpf1/t51.2885-15/sh0.08/e35/11267382_1723324997900784_1791889298_n.jpg #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

ISS Daily Summary Report – 1/6/16 | ISS On-Orbit Status Report

ISS On-Orbit Status Report - January 06, 2016 at 10:54PM ISS Daily Summary Report – 1/6/16 - Kubik-6 Ebox Exchange: Yesterday, Kelly unstowed the European Space Agency (ESA) Kubik-6 facility and exchanged the centrifuge and thermal eBoxes in preparation for the Kubik-6 commissioning. Today he activated and checked out the facility. Kubik is a small controlled-temperature incubator / cooler used to study biological samples in a microgravity environment. It is equipped with removable inserts designed for self-contained, automatic experiments using seeds, cells, or small animals. Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Airlock Operations for Robotics Refueling Mission (RRM) Task Board 4 Retrieval: Peake depressurized and vented the JEM Airlock today in preparation for the retrieval of RRM Task Board 4 (TB4) from the ExPRESS Logistics Carrier-4 (ELC-4), located on the ISS Starboard 3 (S3) Truss. Fluid Shifts Before, During and After Prolonged Space Flight and Their Association with Intracranial Pressure and Visual Impairment (Fluid Shifts): Kelly continued his Return-45 (R-45) multi-day session with baseline imaging collection, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE), Tonometry, and Ultrasounds. Kopra assisted him as the operator. Fluid Shifts investigates the causes for severe and lasting physical changes to astronaut’s eyes. Because the headward fluid shift is a hypothesized contributor to these changes, reversing this fluid shift with a lower body negative pressure device is investigated as a possible intervention. Results from this study may help to develop preventative measures against lasting changes in vision and eye damage. Biological Rhythms 48 Hours: Kopra donned the Holter Electrocardiogram to support JAXA’s Biological Rhythms 48 Hours investigation. He then synchronized data between the Actiwatch and Holter. This investigation studies the effects of long-term microgravity exposure on heart function by analyzing an astronaut’s electrocardiogram for 48 hours. While the ISS schedule follows Greenwich Mean Time, it is not known whether a separate biological rhythm is imposed on long-term flight crews. To study this, astronauts wear an Actiwatch for 96 hours and a Holter electrocardiograph for 48 hours. Dose Tracker: Kopra and Peake completed entries for medication tracking on an iPad. This investigation documents the medication usage of crew members before and during their missions by capturing data regarding medication use during spaceflight, including side effect qualities, frequencies and severities. The data are expected to either support or counter anecdotal evidence of medication ineffectiveness during flight and unusual side effects experienced during flight. It is also expected that specific, near-real-time questioning about symptom relief and side effects will provide the data required to establish whether spaceflight-associated alterations in pharmacokinetics (PK) or pharmacodynamics (PD) is occurring during missions. Russian Pilot-T Experiment: Kelly performed a session of the Russian experiment Pilot-T today. The goal of Pilot-T is to improve methods and develop equipment to assess and predict crewmember performance reliability during the execution of complex operator tasks (such as piloting a space vehicle or controlling transport and robotic equipment on the surface of a spacecraft) during various stages of long-term spaceflight. Sequential Shunt Unit (SSU) Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Preparation: Kopra and Peak worked together to remove arm sizing rings from Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) 3005 in support of resizing activity later in the day. EMU 3005 was then uninstalled from the Aft EMU Don/Doff Assembly (EDDA) and EMU 3011 was installed in its place. Later, EMU 3008 was resized for Peake and EMU 3011 for Kopra. The crew also manually removed gas from the payload water reservoir, recharged the EMU feed water tank, filled a dry Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), and performed a tether inspection. The SSU EVA is scheduled to occur next week on January 15th. Mobile Servicing System (MSS) Operations: Yesterday evening, the Robotics Ground Controllers continued reconfiguring tools and adapters on RRM TB4. This afternoon, TB4 was removed from RRM using the SPDM Robot Micro Conical Tool 2 (RMCT2). Tomorrow, the Mobile Transporter will be moved to Worksite 7 to allow access to the JEM Airlock Slide Table. TB4 will be placed on the Slide Table Thursday night, along with the failed RMCT1, in order to bring both items inside the ISS for return on SpX-8. Russian Treadmill (БД-2): The Russian crew reported a rubber shock absorbing belt in the БД-2 was torn. Photos have been downlinked for ground analysis. NASA - Astronomy Picture of the Day - January 06, 2016 Comets and Bright Star - This timely, telescopic, two panel mosaic spans about 10 full moons across planet Earth's predawn skies. Recorded as the year began from Tenerife, Canary Islands, near the top of the frame are the faint coma and tail of Comet Borrelly (P/19). A comet with a seven year orbital period, Borrelly's nucleus was visited by the ion propelled spacecraft Deep Space 1 near the beginning of the 21st century. Anchoring the scene at the bottom is brilliant star Arcturus (Alpha Bootes) and Comet Catalina (C/2013 US10) a first time visitor from the Oort Cloud. Catalina's yellowish dust tail extends below and right. Buffeted by winds and storms from the Sun, the comet's complex ion tail sweeps up and toward the right, across most of the field of view. Remarkably, one of the composition's 30 second exposure subframes also caught the trail of a bright meteor, slashing toward the left between comets and bright star. via NASA http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap160106.html #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

"Twins" of Superstar Eta Carinae in Other Galaxies: Eta Carinae, the most luminous and massive stellar system within 10,000 light-years, is best known for an enormous eruption seen in the mid-19th century that hurled at least 10 times the sun's mass into space. This expanding veil of gas and dust, which still shrouds Eta Carinae, makes it the only object of its kind known in our galaxy. Now a study using archival data from our Spitzer and Hubble space telescopes has found five objects with similar properties in other galaxies for the first time. ISS Daily Summary Report – 1/5/16 | ISS On-Orbit Status Report

ISS On-Orbit Status Report - January 05, 2016 at 10:44PM ISS Daily Summary Report – 1/5/16 - Kubik-6 Ebox Exchange: Kelly unstowed the European Space Agency (ESA) Kubik-6 facility and exchanged the centrifuge and thermal eBoxes in preparation for the Kubik-6 commissioning. He then performed an activation and checkout of the unit. Kubik is a small controlled-temperature incubator / cooler used to study biological samples in a microgravity environment. It is equipped with removable inserts designed for self-contained, automatic experiments using seeds, cells, or small animals. Fluid Shifts Before, During and After Prolonged Space Flight and Their Association with Intracranial Pressure and Visual Impairment (Fluid Shifts): Kelly and Kornienko continued their Return-45 (R-45) Fluid Shifts session today. Kelly collected blood samples and placed those and Kornienko’s saliva, blood and urine samples into the Minus Eighty Degree Celsius Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI). Fluid Shifts is a joint NASA-Russian experiment that investigates the causes for severe and lasting physical changes to astronaut’s eyes. Because the headward fluid shift is a hypothesized contributor to these changes, reversing this fluid shift with a lower body negative pressure device is under investigation to support development of preventative measures against a lasting change in vision. Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) Loop Scrubs: Kopra configured EMU suits 3005 and 3008 for loop scrubbing. Once the scrubbing activity was complete, the associated hardware was reconfigured in order to perform iodination of Ion Filters for both suits. A sample containing 250 mL of the water was obtained after the loop scrub activity to determine the effectiveness of the filtering. A small portion of this water sample was utilized for a conductivity test onboard ISS and the remaining water will be sent to the ground for chemical analysis. Dynamic Onboard Ubiquitous Graphics (DOUG) Review: Peake and Kopra performed a review of DOUG Software in order to study translation and robotics operation paths for the upcoming Sequential Shunt Unit (SSU) Extravehicular Activity (EVA), which is scheduled to occur on January 15th. Enhanced Caution and Warning System (ECWS) Onboard Training: Kopra reviewed ECWS operations then practiced EVA Cuff Checklist procedures. EVA Tool Build: Peake built two separate brush tools in order to assist in cleaning and lubricating threads during the upcoming EVA. Elektron Fault: Elektron was activated this afternoon, however experienced a fault and shutdown soon after. The crew performed initial troubleshooting steps by inspecting the EDV for the presence of bubbles. The crew confirmed that the EDV was clean with only a few very small bubbles present. A second attempt to activate Elektron was performed without success. At the end of the crew day, the crew purged the Elektron and left it deactivated. Another activation attempt will be performed within the next few days. Elektron had been deactivated since December 24th for the high beta period. Mobile Servicing System (MSS) Operations: Yesterday, following translation of the Mobile Transporter (MT) to Worksite 2, robotics ground controllers maneuvered the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) to pick up the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) from Mobile Base System (MBS) Power and Data Grapple Fixture (PDGF) #2. Overnight, while capturing the SPDM PDGF, a new Dual Stage Carriage Rates functionality was tested for carriage mechanism motion. Also, SPDM Latch End Effector (LEE) Diagnostics were performed as well as SPDM Backup Drive Unit (BDU) checkouts required every 180 days. The MSS was then maneuvered into position to start Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM) Task board #4 (TB4) operations which are being performed this afternoon. NASA - Astronomy Picture of the Day - January 05, 2016 The Lagoon Nebula in Hydrogen Sulfur and Oxygen - The majestic Lagoon Nebula is filled with hot gas and the home for many young stars. Spanning 100 light years across while lying only about 5000 light years distant, the Lagoon Nebula is so big and bright that it can be seen without a telescope toward the constellation of the Archer (Sagittarius). Many bright stars are visible from NGC 6530, an open cluster that formed in the nebula only several million years ago. The greater nebula, also known as M8 and NGC 6523, is named "Lagoon" for the band of dust seen to the right of the open cluster's center. The featured image was taken in the light emitted by Hydrogen (shown in brown), Sulfur (red), and Oxygen (blue) and displayed in enhanced color. The featured picture is a newly processed panorama of M8, capturing twice the diameter of the Full Moon. Star formation continues in the Lagoon Nebula as witnessed by the many globules that exist there. via NASA http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap160105.html #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

Image: The Mice Galaxies are an example of interacting and merging galaxies. Credit: NASA/ESA Across the universe we see a countless number of galaxies. From spirals, ellipticals, and strangely shaped galaxies, the universe contains a wide variety of different shapes and sizes of galaxies. Sometimes galaxies interact, collide, and even merge together to form larger galaxies. This happens quite frequently across the universe and is important to the evolution of galaxies. Galaxies that pass close to one another will interact with each other through their gravity. The gravity of each galaxy pulls on the other, which can distort the galaxies shape. When two spiral galaxies interact, the gravity of these galaxies can even 'unwind' the galaxies spiral arms, stretching them out across space. This is how astronomers believe most, if not all, irregular galaxies form. As galaxies interact, they not only distort the shape of either galaxy, they also cause a phase of intense star formation, the effect of which is either one or both galaxies will become starburst galaxies. As two or more galaxies gravitationally interact with each other, tidal forces cause gas within both galaxies to clump together, leading to a phase of intense star formation. If two or more galaxies happen to collide, it's very unlikely that any stars will actually collide. However, it's very likely, perhaps even inevitable, that nebulae within both galaxies will collide. This colliding of nebulae will result in gas clumping together and gravitationally collapsing, leading to a phase of accelerated star formation. Because of this starburst phase, nearly all of the star forming material will be used up by the time the collision is done, and no new stars will be born within the galaxy. This stunning image shows the group of galaxies called Stephan's Quintet, located in the constellation of Pegasus. This group of galaxies appears to contain five galaxies, when in fact it contains four. The fifth galaxy, the bluish galaxy designated NGC 7320, is actually located much closer than the others. NGC 7320 lies around 40 million light years away, while the others are much farther, at a distance of 250 million light years. The four galaxies that are part of Stephan's Quintet consist of the elliptical galaxy NGC 7317, the barred spiral galaxy NGC 7319, and two colliding galaxies designated NGC 7318a and NGC 7318b. These two galaxies are currently merging together and will likely become a single galaxy sometime in the future. Both these galaxies show clear signs of a galactic collision, including lanes of dust and stars being thrown out of both galaxies, as well as a burst of star formation due to colliding dust. This stunning image shows the Eagle Nebula, a star forming region located in the constellation Ophiuchus some 7,000 light years away. Since it was first photographed by Hubble in 1994, the Eagle Nebula has become one of the best known areas to study star formation. Deep within the heart of the Eagle Nebula lies magnificent pillar-like structures, such as the Pillars of Creation and the Stellar Spire. These structures can be very large. Some of these pillars are more than ten light years in height. These and other structures within the Eagle Nebula are regions in which star formation is currently taking place. Infrared images have revealed the existence of young protostars within the nebula. These baby stars will one day become real stars, perhaps with their own planets. A massive star located within the central star cluster M16 has recently gone supernova. The shockwave from this supernova will tear through the nebula, possibly even destroying the Pillars of Creation themselves. Newborn stars will be exposed and the shockwave will likely trigger a new wave of star formation. Astronomers have used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory to discover one of the nearest supermassive black holes to Earth that is currently undergoing powerful outbursts, as described in our latest press release. This galactic burping was found in the Messier 51 galaxy, which is located about 26 million light years from Earth and contains a large spiral galaxy NGC 5194 (also known by its nickname of the “Whirlpool”), merging with a smaller companion galaxy NGC 5195. The main panel of this graphic shows M51 in visible light data from the Hubble Space Telescope (red, green, and blue). The box at the top of the image outlines the field of view by Chandra in the latest study, which focuses on the smaller component of M51, NGC 5195. The inset to the right shows the details of the Chandra data (blue) of this region. Researchers found a pair of arcs in X-ray emission close to the center of the galaxy, which they interpret as two outbursts from the galaxy’s supermassive black hole (see annotated image for additional information). The authors estimate that it took about one to three million years for the inner arc to reach its current position, and three to six million years for the outer arc. Just outside the outer X-ray arc is a slender region of hydrogen emission detected in an optical image. This suggests that the X-ray emitting gas has “snow-plowed” or swept-up the hydrogen gas from the center of the galaxy. This is a clear case where a supermassive black hole is affecting its host galaxy, in a phenomenon that astronomers called “feedback.” This arc of hydrogen gas contains what appears to be two or three small “HII regions.” An HII (pronounced "H-two") region is created when the radiation from hot, young stars strips away the electrons from neutral hydrogen atoms (HI) to form clouds of ionized hydrogen (HII). This suggests that the outer arc has plowed up enough material to trigger the formation of new stars. The outbursts of the supermassive black hole in NGC 5195 may have been triggered by the interaction of this galaxy with the large spiral galaxy in M51, causing gas to be disrupted and then funneled down towards the black hole. #chandra #NASA - January 05, 2016 at 09:14PM Source: https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xfp1/t51.2885-15/sh0.08/e35/1209460_1544095872582497_491560687_n.jpg #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

ISS Daily Summary Report – 1/4/16 | ISS On-Orbit Status Report

ISS On-Orbit Status Report - January 04, 2016 at 10:14PM ISS Daily Summary Report – 1/4/16 - Fluid Shifts Before, During and After Prolonged Space Flight and Their Association with Intracranial Pressure and Visual Impairment (Fluid Shifts): This morning, Kelly began his Return-45 (R-45) Fluid Shifts Dilution Measurements. Upon wakeup he collected saliva, blood and urine and inserted them into the Minus Eighty Degree Celsius Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI) prior to ingesting a Sodium Bromide (NaBr) tracer. Throughout the day, he performed more urine, blood, and saliva collections, inserting those samples into MELFI as well. The Dilution Measurements are the first of three parts in the series of R-45 Fluid Shifts measurements. Biological Rhythms 48-Hour: Kopra began his Biological Rhythms experiment today by preparing and starting the Actiwatch. Tomorrow, he will don a Holter Monitor to collect Electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements for 48 hours. Biological Rhythms 48 hours studies the effects of long-term microgravity exposure on heart function by analyzing an astronaut’s electrocardiogram for 48 hours. While the ISS station maintains Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as its time zone, it remains unknown whether a separate biological rhythm is imposed on long-term flight crews. To study this astronauts wear an Actiwatch sleep monitor for 96 hours and a Holter electrocardiograph for 48 hours in the middle of that sequence. Advanced Colloids Experiment (ACE)-Heated-2 (H2): Peake activated ACE-H2, which was delivered on Orbital ATK (OA)-4. He configured the Light Microscopy Module (LMM) for the next series of science runs with an ACE Heated Sample. He also cleaned up residual oil and removed the ACE Heated Sample currently installed inside the LMM Auxiliary Fluids Container (AFC). At three times during the day, Peake mixed the samples using a magnet from the BCAT experiment. The ACE-H2 experiment involves the design and assembly of complex three-dimensional structures resulting from the interaction of different sized particles suspended within a fluid medium. These so-called “self-assembled colloidal structures”, are vital to the design of advanced materials. In the microgravity environment, insight will be provided into the relationship between particle interactions and their shape, surface charge, and concentration. Their resulting structure and stability is a fundamental issue in condensed matter science. The use of the LMM on the international space station will enable insight into finer control of the self-assembly (as well as directed-assembly) of such colloidal-based structures. Cardiac and Vessel Structure and Function with Long-Duration Space Flight and Recovery (Vascular Echo) Checkout: Peake installed the Cardiolab Portable Doppler Driver on the European Physiology Module (EPM) laptop. Peake and ground teams then checked the functionality of the drivers in advance of the Vascular Echo Doppler Ultrasound protocol, scheduled for Thursday. The Vascular Echo experiment investigates the stiffening of the arteries and increased blood pressure (hypertension) observed in some returning ISS crewmembers. By observing the changes in blood vessels, and the heart, while the crew members are in space and following their recovery on return to Earth, investigators hope to provide insight into potential countermeasures to help maintain crew member health, and quality of life. Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) 3008 Checkout: Kopra performed a checkout of EMU 3008 in order to verify all systems on the suit were functioning properly after its launch on OA-4. NASA - Astronomy Picture of the Day - January 04, 2016 Earthset from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter - On the Moon, the Earth never rises -- or sets. If you were to sit on the surface of the Moon, you would see the Earth just hang in the sky. This is because the Moon always keeps the same side toward the Earth. Curiously, the featured image does picture the Earth setting over a lunar edge. This was possible because the image was taken from a spacecraft orbiting the Moon - specifically the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). In fact, LRO orbits the Moon so fast that, from the spacecraft, the Earth appears to set anew about every two hours. The featured image captured one such Earthset about three months ago. By contrast, from the surface of the Earth, the Moon sets about once a day -- with the primary cause being the rotation of the Earth. LRO was launched in 2009 and, while creating a detailed three dimensional map of the Moon's surface, is also surveying the Moon for water and possible good landing spots for future astronauts. via NASA http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap160104.html #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

This beautiful image shows a region located within the Orion Nebula. This complex region of the Orion Nebula contains both emission and reflection nebula. Located just above the centre of the image is the variable star LL Orionis some 1,500 light years away. This relatively young star produces a stellar wind far more energetic than the stellar wind produced by the sun. The fast moving winds from LL Orionis interacts with the surrounding gas, producing a shock front. The arcing structure located just left of LL Orionis is this shock front that the star is producing. As LL Orionis moves through the Orion Nebula, it creates beautiful shockwaves that produce stunning structures like the arc seen in the image. What's your favourite nebula? The complex cloud patterns in Jupiter's atmosphere are absolutely stunning and are one of Jupiter's most unique features. Although the other gas giants in the solar system have been observed to have similar patterns in their atmospheres, none are as recognizable as Jupiter's. The long atmospheric bands in Jupiter's atmosphere are created due to Jupiter's fast rotation. Jupiter rotates once every ten hours. This rapid rotation causes the clouds to be stretched out around the planet, creating the magnificent bands we see on Jupiter. There is still much mystery surrounding the atmosphere and weather of Jupiter, such as some of its chemical composition and its colour. Exactly why Jupiter's clouds are coloured the way they are remains a mystery. The primary chemicals that the clouds are made of, such as ammonia, should produce colourless clouds. Astronomers believe that there may be complex and colourful molecules of elements such as carbon, sulphur, and phosphorus, which are responsible for the colours in Jupiter's clouds. Most of what astronomers know about Jupiter's atmosphere came from the atmospheric probe released by the Galileo spacecraft. The probe apparently descended through a dry region in Jupiter's atmosphere, but astronomers have discovered evidence of water in Jupiter's atmosphere, yet how much of it is actually in Jupiter's atmosphere remains a mystery. The JUNO mission, which will be arriving at Jupiter on July 4th this year, will study Jupiter and its atmosphere and will hopefully give us new insights into this massive planet. Our Curiosity Mars rover rounds Martian dune to get to the other side. Curiosity, partway through the first up-close study ever conducted of extraterrestrial sand dunes, is providing dramatic views of a dune's steep face, where cascading sand has sculpted very different textures than the wavy ripples visible on the dune's windward slope. This Dec. 18, 2015, view of the downwind face of "Namib Dune" on Mars covers 360 degrees, including a portion of Mount Sharp on the horizon. What looks like a pair of Saturnian satellites is actually a trio upon close inspection. Here, Cassini has captured Enceladus (313 miles or 504 kilometers across) above the rings and Rhea (949 miles or 1,527 kilometers across) below. The comparatively tiny speck of Atlas (19 miles or 30 kilometers across) can also be seen just above and to the left of Rhea, and just above the thin line of Saturn's F ring. This view looks toward the unilluminated side of the rings from about 0.34 degrees below the ring plane. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Sept. 24, 2015. The view was obtained at a distance of approximately 1.8 million miles (2.8 million kilometers) from Rhea. Image scale on Rhea is 10 miles (16 kilometers) per pixel. The distance to Enceladus was 1.3 million miles (2.1 million kilometers) for a scale of 5 miles (8 kilometers) per pixel. The distance to Atlas was 1.5 million miles (2.4 million) kilometers) for an image scale at Atlas of 9 miles (14 kilometers) per pixel. #NASA - January 05, 2016 at 02:52AM Source: https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xta1/t51.2885-15/sh0.08/e35/917914_976862695734443_1391842506_n.jpg #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

NASA - Astronomy Picture of the Day - January 03, 2016 A Starry Night of Iceland - On some nights, the sky is the best show in town. On this night, the sky was not only the best show in town, but a composite image of the sky won an international competition for landscape astrophotography. The featured winning image was taken in 2011 over Jökulsárlón, the largest glacial lake in Iceland. The photographer combined six exposures to capture not only two green auroral rings, but their reflections off the serene lake. Visible in the distant background sky is the band of our Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy. A powerful coronal mass ejection from the Sun caused auroras to be seen as far south as Wisconsin, USA. Solar activity over the past week has resulted in auroras just over the past few days. via NASA http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap160103.html #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

The sixth planet from the sun and the jewel of the solar system, Saturn is definitely an absolutely stunning world. Although the other gas giants in the solar system have ring systems, Saturn's is easily the most recognizable and beautiful. Using even a small telescope, you can easily see Saturn's rings. Through a telescope they appear solid, and it's not that surprising that it was once believed that the rings were indeed solid. The first astronomer to recognize that there was something different about Saturn was Galileo Galilei, who observed Saturn's rings through his small telescope. However, Galileo had no idea that what he saw was a ring system. Rather, Galileo believed that Saturn was accompanied by two large moons on either side. Half a century later, the Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens built a telescope capable of showing the true nature of Saturn's rings. Huygens realized that the strange structure around Saturn was not two large moons as Galileo had thought, but was actually a ring around Saturn. As telescopes improved, astronomers began discovering that Saturn was not surrounded by a single ring. Rather, it was surrounded by a ring system containing many rings. Gaps were also discovered within Saturn's rings. The astronomer Giovanni Cassini was the first to discover such a division in Saturn's rings, which would later be called the Cassini Division. However, it was still a mystery of what the rings were composed of. A solution to this problem came in 1859, when the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell proposed that Saturn's rings were composed of countless small fragments, like rocks, snowballs, and larger bodies. Despite the success of this model, astronomers were still surprised when the first spacecrafts to reach Saturn revealed that the rings were indeed composed of countless fragments. Some as small as dust grains, while others are as large as a house. The fifth planet from the sun and the largest and most massive planet in the solar system, Jupiter. Jupiter is so large in fact that you could fit every other planet in the solar system inside of it and still have room left over. Jupiter belongs to a class of planet called a gas giant. Jupiter is composed almost entirely of hydrogen and helium, with smaller amounts of other elements such as sulphur, which are likely responsible for the reddish and brownish colours in Jupiters upper atmosphere. Jupiter rotates once every 10 hours. The fast rotation of Jupiter creates the long bands we see in Jupiters atmosphere. This rapid rotation generates enormous coriolis forces that deflect Jupiters weather systems, causing them to wrap around the planet and form the bands we see surrounding Jupiter. Beneath about 600 miles of Jupiter's atmosphere, the pressure becomes so great that the hydrogen is compressed into a liquid form, turning Jupiters interior into an ocean of liquid hydrogen. Deeper still, the pressure becomes so great that the hydrogen splits into electrically charged ions, which forms an ocean of liquid metallic hydrogen. This ocean generates huge electric fields that produces a massive magnetic field around Jupiter. Jupiter's magnetic field is so large that it stretches nearly all the way to Saturn. Material from the solar wind is drawn in by Jupiter's magnetic field, producing spectacular aurorae, which can be seen in the image above. Astronomers are still unsure whether or not Jupiter has a solid core. If Jupiter does have a solid core, it's likely no larger than the Earth, and likely plays no significant or relevant role in what happens in Jupiter's upper atmosphere. The pressures are so great within Jupiter's interior that it would be virtually impossible to send any kind of spacecraft to find out if Jupiter really does have a solid core or not. This may perhaps remain a mystery forever. NASA - Astronomy Picture of the Day - January 02, 2016 Sky Lights in the New Year - Triggered by the impact of a coronal mass ejection on New Year's eve, a moderate geomagnetic storm brought a celebration of sky lights to planet Earth's high latitudes yesterday. In this New Year's nightscape, the shimmering reddish curtains of aurora australis along a southern horizon are captured over Morgiana, SW Victoria, Australia. Of course, more permanent jewels of the southern skies are on the scene. The southern Milky Way, Alpha and Beta Centauri, and bright stars of the Southern Cross are on the left. In silhouette, branches of the large foreground tree stretch across the Milky Way's satellite galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic clouds. The bright star framed near the tips of tree branches at right is Achernar. Alpha star of the constellation Eridanus, Achernar is sometimes known as the southern end of the river. via NASA http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap160102.html #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

Enceladus looks as though it is half lit by sunlight in this view from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, but looks can be deceiving. The area on the right, where surface features can be made out, are actually illuminated by light reflected off of Saturn. A sliver of surface illuminated by direct sunlight is visible on the left. Images like this one are designed to capture the extended plume of icy material spraying from the moon's south polar region. Such images need to be taken with Cassini looking toward the icy moon's night side, since the small particles in the plume are most easily seen when backlit by the sun. This view looks toward the leading hemisphere of Enceladus and was taken in visible light with Cassini's narrow-angle camera on May 10, 2015. Enceladus is 313 miles (504 kilometers) across. Image: Spiral galaxy Messier 83 Credit: NASA/ESA Most of the matter that we can see in the universe is concentrated into galaxies and galaxy clusters. We live in a galaxy called the Milky Way. Yet our galaxy is merely one of billions, perhaps hundreds of billions of other galaxies. Wherever we look in the universe we find galaxies. So how and when did they form? Using telescopes, such as Hubble, astronomers have deduced that the first galaxies began forming around 12 billion years ago, more than a billion years after the Big Bang. This answers when galaxies formed, but how did they form? Astronomers know very little about how the first galaxies formed. However, they do know some of the basics about how it happened. Sometime after the Big Bang, most of the visible matter in the universe consisted of hydrogen and helium gas clouds. All this matter was uniformly spread across the universe. However, due to small fluctuations in the gravitational fields of these clouds, there were some areas that were slightly denser than others. Over the course of millions of years, the hydrogen gas clumps together and collapses, leading to the formation of the first stars. Vast numbers of stars would have formed. Stars that formed relatively close together would be bound together by their gravity. As more stars came together to form larger clusters, their gravity would have become stronger, allowing them to pull in even more stars. The first galaxies were being born. There's a problem with this. How was there fluctuations in the early universe that caused some areas to be more dense than others? The best explanation is inflation. Almost immediately after the Big Bang, the universe went through a phase of rapid expansion in which space expanded faster than light speed. Quantum fluctuations or jitters, which happen in the quantum realm, would have happened in the macroscopic world due to the extreme amounts of energy during inflation. These quantum jitters caused some regions to be slightly denser than others. NASA - Astronomy Picture of the Day - January 01, 2016 Comet Catalina Tails - A new year's treat for binoculars, as 2016 begins Comet Catalina (C/2013 US10) now sweeps through planet Earth's predawn skies near bright Arcturus, alpha star of Bootes. But this telescopic mosaic from December 21 follows the pretty tails of the comet across a field of view as wide as 10 full moons. The smattering of distant galaxies and faint stars in the background are in the constellation Virgo. Trailing behind the comet's orbit, Catalina's dust tail fans out below and left in the frame. Its ion tail is angled toward the top right, away from the Sun and buffeted by the solar wind. On January 17, the outward bound visitor from the Oort Cloud will make its closest approach to Earth, a mere 110 million kilometers away, seen near bright stars along the handle of the Big Dipper. via NASA http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap160101.html #nasa #space #iss #isro #mars #marsorbiter #outerspace #lightyears #milkyway #universe #galaxy #stars #sun #moon #saturn #jupiter #stumble #stumblespace

Happy New Years everyone! For my first post of the year I have decided to post about the Helix Nebula, which happens to be my favourite. Located in the constellation Aquarius at around 700 light years away, the Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula and is one of the closest to the Earth. The Helix Nebula is the result of the central star losing material to the surrounding space, creating this planetary nebula. This central star is destined to become white dwarf. The Helix Nebula was the first planetary nebula in which astronomers discovered cometary knots. These are called cometary knots due to their resemblance to comets, with bright cusps and long tails. To date, astronomers have found around 20,000 cometary knots within the Helix Nebula, all of which extend away from the central star. Some of these cometary knots are larger than our own solar system. Hope everyone has an amazing year!
